Actually, no, they can be dangerous. Africanized Honey Bees aka "killer bees" are a real thing. Observed in the state of North Carolina since 1993, they are now prevalent and found throughout the state. We do run into them and handle them. We believe it is crucial to address upfront the potential danger that some infestations of honey bees can pose directly to humans and animals. Africanized honey bees are known for their aggressive behavior and have been known to attack without provocation. Unfortunately, bees with these genetic traits can and do "swarm attack" through pheromone release and cause injury or even death to humans and animals, making it important to address the situation with a sense of urgency. 500 stings is enough to kill a full grown adult human, EVEN IF NOT ALLERGIC.
Bee colonies can cause structural damage - and fast. It is indeed a time sensitive issue. The bee colonies cause structural damage to structures as they create hives in walls, soffits, roofs, crawlspaces, and other areas. Aside from the direct chewing and impact of the bees themselves, their hives create moisture, mold, and attract other pests into the structure. The longer the colony resides within the structure the larger the colony and the further the damage can extend. Within a week of infestation a colony can build comb around 2' wide and upwards from there.
In North Carolina, honey bees are considered beneficial insects and are protected by state law. Therefore, it is factually illegal to intentionally or willfully kill honey bees in NC state without a permit or a justifiable reason. You may have been referred directly by large well known pest control companies. The pest control teams will generally NOT handle honey bees due to potential liability. However, if honey bees pose a threat to human health or safety, or if they are causing significant property damage, it may be possible to obtain a permit from the local government to eliminate the bees yourself. This is not something we engage in or recommend. Simply killing the bees inside the structure (aside from being difficult to achieve completely) does not eliminate the built up organic matter within the structure and the resultant rot, creating unwanted smells, moisture and ultimately attracts more pests, molds or other issues. If you wait, it becomes worse then dealing with it immediately.
An expert, legal, complete and conscientious removal wherein the colony is entirely safely removed along with all the comb and organic debris in the cavity. The cavity is then scraped clean, sterilized, washed with natural soap and scents that deter MANY pests. Thereafter, we typically allow the cavity to air out for several days, before returning to completely patch, seal and repair the cavity. The airing out process allows straggler bees to move on and the cavity to dry out from the impact of the colony and our removal process.
